Blatant lawlessness from our politicians has become the norm. We are now a full blown banana republic where individual politicians are the law in their own fiefdom domains regardless of what laws are on the books. Their claimed ends justify their means and their supporters tribally cheer them on. The window to return to lawfulness is rapidly closing and in turn Balkanization is rapidly spreading.
The fact of the matter is that the Rubicon has already been crossed in terms of any kind of restoration of the Constitutional rule of law. That's done and over with. You cannot stop lawlessness in government via civil means. Especially in a system our rulers have themselves corrupted to their permanent benefit. If that were possible, no violent revolutions would ever be necessary. But alas, they are - as our own separation from the Crown attests. You cannot negotiate to win back liberty lost by a corrupted system perverted to serving itself.
The Rubicon into that banana republic you spoke of has been crossed already, and we are not going to see any kind of return to the system devised and intended by the Founders. A wicked and debased people wholly unmoored from morality and our Foundational Principles makes that an impossibility. Optimism and wishful thinking are not going to arrest or slow the statism we have grown accustomed to suffer because we have lied to ourselves that it is sufferable and necessary.
So we seemed doom to repeat the same stupid fate of every other Republic lost before ours.
More than half the population I figure either supports the existing Big Government Statism or want to see it grow and expanded to the point of imposing overt totalitarianism either via a sole dictatorship or full-blown Communism.
