Arizona special election: AP projects Lesko the winner

Apr 24, 2018,

Democrats and Republicans are watching the Arizona special election for signs of their political standing leading into the November midterms.

A Democratic loss by a single digit will be seen by that party as a "symbolic victory" and as evidence that enthusiasm remains strong. However, Republicans seeking to guard their deep-red stronghold worry that a loss could signal that their hold on the House of Representatives is in trouble.

Facing off tonight is Democrat and cancer research advocate Hiral Tiperneni against Republican former state senator Debbie Lesko.

Lesko, the Republican won by about 53% to 47% per current projections. See NY Times, they say it's a conservative district, this was for Trent Franks' seat.

"It's a long way to Tipirneni"

Is Lesko a good guy? Bad guy? Arizona guy? Born a guy?

Lesko, Debbie, former state senator... otherwise, I know little about her.

Considering this was another district with a sex scandal, the GOP dodge a bullet here.

At this point, I think it's a safe assumption that Republicans are just as horny as Democrats and can no longer hide it.

I understand that a 53% to 47% win in that district is pretty bad.  Should have been a bigger lead.

What was the GOP candidate running on? Repealing Obamacare? They seem to be light on credible issues.

"I'm not a democrat"?  They are very light on issues.

Trump won the District by 20%, so this is being spun as a big loss by the Republicans.

It's ridiculous to compare vote spreads in a presidential election to a special election for a House seat.

Trent Frank always won by a lot, too.  I say, "A win's a win."  The Dems wasted a lot of $$$ in this race, and they're going to waste a lot more in AZ this Fall.

It is.  I don’t think pundits are being honest by comparing results from Nov 2016 to this, or any other special election.  The name recognition and enthusiasm aren’t nearly the same.  Jones got his squeaker victory, but I expect he’ll get blown out by double digits in 2020.

The GOP had better sit down and come up with compelling reasons to vote for them. Reading through Debbies generic issues puts one into a coma....

That is the problem for most GOP candidates.  What do they stand for?

Arizona GOP winner to join Freedom Caucus

By Scott Wong - 04/25/18 08:54 AM EDT

Rep.-elect Debbie Lesko, who narrowly won a special election in Arizona Tuesday night, is expected to join the House Freedom Caucus after she is sworn in, the conservative group’s leader, Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) told The Hill.

Both Meadows and former Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) endorsed Lesko in her GOP primary earlier this year. And the Freedom Fund, the super PAC aligned with the Freedom Caucus, contributed to her campaign during the primary.

“We felt she was the best candidate in the 8th district of Arizona. We look forward to having her join our ranks as a strong contributing member of the Freedom Caucus when she gets sworn in as a new member of Congress,” Meadows said in a Wednesday morning phone interview.
