Streaks and tweaks

JOEY, MICKEY, AND MIGUEL---When Yankee rookie Miguel Andujar continued his seven-game hitting streak Monday, he parked himself in
the Yankee record book. He's only the third Yankee to hit for extra bases in seven straight games before age 24.

Andujar's exclusive company in that department are a couple of guys named Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. Not too bad for the guy the
Yankees once pondered trading in a package for Gerrit Cole.

The rook who was plugged in at third base when struggling Brandon Drury hit the disabled list also joined Alex Rodriguez as the only two
Yankee third basemen with extra base hits in seven straight or more since 1930.

Andujar also has more extra base hits (14) in his first nineteen major league games than any Yankee except DiMaggio. (16.) He has eight
doubles, one triple, and three home runs during the streak.

ON SECOND THOUGHT (AND LOOK), YOU'RE A DEAD DUCK---The defending world champion Astros lost one the hard way to the hot-enough-
in-pursuit Angels Monday night . . . on an overturned blown call at third base.

The scenario: Angels reliever Kenyan Middleton worked to Astros catcher Max Stassi with Yuli Gurriel on second (base hit) and Alex Bregman
(followup walk) on first, and two outs, both on strikeouts. Middleton had Stassi in the hole 0-2 when his next pitch bounced.

Catcher Martin Maldonado blocked the pitch. Gurriel and Bregman both tried to advance. Maldonado whipped a throw to third and Gurriel was
a dead mallard when Luis Valbuena got the tag on him. Or was he?

The ump called safe. The Angels called for a review. The review was granted, the safe call was overturned, and the Astros lost the hard way, 2-0.
But it wasn't entirely Gurriel's fault. Nobody told Bregman to run so far trying to advance that Gurriel on a late jump might have felt a little extra
pressure to go.

On a clean jump and a coordinated basepath plan, Gurriel might have gotten a better jump and taken the base on the play. Which would have left
the count on Stassi 1-2 and given Stassi a chance to keep the game alive or even tie it.

WAR OF THE ROSES---With an approximate $1 million a year nut he earns from regularly-scheduled autograph sessions in Las Vegas, Pete Rose
can't be called a pauper . . . until he turns his daily take into big losses in the local casinos, according to his estranged wife and TMZ.

Carol Rose, who remains legally married to Rose despite a divorce action that began in 2011, has filed new divorce documents (he first filed for
the divorce and has since acquired a younger fiancee), "claim[ing] Pete is jerking her around in the divorce---and she wants what she believes is
her rightful cut of the community property."

The estranged Mrs. Rose, his second wife, claims Charlie Hustler makes $100,000 a month minimum but blows it at the casinos and has run up
a fresh bill with the IRS while he's at it. She's demanding a court-ordered full accounting of Rose's financial picture.

COULD WE HAVE THIS FREE AGENCY OVER AGAIN?---Don't be shocked if a lot of teams are asking that very question when they gaze upon Royals
third baseman Mike Moustakas.

Moustakas may have mis-read the actual winter market for third basemen. It took him until 8 March to find a new job---with his incumbent team,
who signed him for one year, $5.5 million, and a mutual $15 million option. That was enough of a bargain.

But with Moustakas at this writing on a fourteen-game hitting streak, and hitting for a .953 OPS with six bombs and seventeen steaks in twenty
games so far, what would you call the deal? Grand theft might come to mind for some.

Yep, Gurriel broke a cardinal rule last night (and I don't mean the St. Louis variety).
