The Texas National Guard began deploying 250 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border this weekend and will continue to do so through Monday as part of an order President Donald Trump signed Wednesday aimed at targeting illegal immigration, Texas Military Department officials said Friday.

Texas was the first state to act on Trump’s call Tuesday to deploy the military to the border. The Texas National Guard will also send aircraft, ground surveillance vehicles and equipment to the Texas-Mexico border, said Brig. Gen. Tracy Norris with the Texas Military Department....

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced he would raise the total number of Texas National Guard troops to "more than 1,000" along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Across all border states, "the goal is to have at least 4,000 deployed here in about a month or two," the Republican governor said Monday during a radio interview with KTSA.

Texas will increase its number of guardsmen by about 300 per week until "fully staffed up," Abbott said. About 250 troops currently are near the border....

Texas National Guard Troops Will Be Armed, Says Governor

“Whenever they’re in a position where they could be confronted by someone who is very dangerous, they will be armed,” Governor Abbott told KTSA’s Trey Ware. “Our National Guard will be able to fully defend themselves.”

Abbott explained they will not be armed in an aggressive fashion but as appropriate for self-defense while doing a dangerous job.

“We want to downplay any notion that would be misinformed that our National Guard are showing up with military bayonets, trying to take on anybody who’s coming across the border because that is not their role,” the Texas governor explained....
