US Trucker Shortage Squeezing Companies, Economy
By Fan Yu, Epoch Times

Someday, self-driving freight trucks may rule the highways in America. But today, an acute shortage of truck drivers across the United States is a concern for companies and economists.

Increasing retail and industrial demand fueled by a strong economy and rising wages have boosted inventory levels at businesses, increasing transportation needs. But poor weather conditions coupled with full national employment have squeezed the supply of trucks and truckers, pushing up hauling rates and transportation costs.

Demand for truck freight reached a record high in early 2018 before falling slightly in March, according to trucking industry data tracker DAT Solutions.

I believe it. Open any local newspaper to the help-wanted section and the one type of opening that's constantly there is for truck drivers with a top-level commercial driver's license.

Trucker shortage?  Has anyone driven on an interstate lately?
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

In order to be a Trucker you
A.  Have to have a DL
2.  Pass a piss test. And then continue to do so.

That rules out 75% of your pool.

You have to have a CDL, which is a bit harder to get than a DL from what I hear.

Plus it's generally long-haul truckers that are in demand, for good reason. Very few people want to spend that amount of time on the road. It basically precludes having a family of any sort.

It's a tough job. Truckers are some of the most at risk for sleep apnea and heart related disorders.

I'm a little more concerned with the idea of robot truck drivers than whatever it costs to pay a human.

Fan Yu can go fan himself.
