SpaceX BFR Mars rocket tests may start in first half of 2019
« on: March 13, 2018, 12:08:37 am »

Elon Musk, well known for his ambitious deadlines, has revealed that SpaceX may start testing its Mars rocket in the first half of next year. It’s no secret that Musk envisions a future in which humans have branched out from their Earth-bound homes, but taking humans to Mars is a mission still years away. The testing of its BFR system, however, underscores the progress SpaceX has made toward this goal in recent years.

Musk revealed the ambitious timeline during a speech at the South by South West (SXSW) festival in Texas in recent days. Though the company is still a long way off from actually sending humans to Mars, its Mars rocket tests could be less than a year away. According to Musk, starting in the first half of 2019, his private space company may start some test flights that involve going up and down.

Given the gargantuan thrust of the BFR, the enviro-whackos will probably litigate the hell out of Elon to stop him from ground testing it, much less launching it. Back in the early 1970's, the enviroweenies were seriously considering suing NASA to stop launching more Saturn 5's due to reports the second stage punched huge holes in the ozone layer. If NASA had not definitely already put an end to moon launches they would have.

Originally announced as an additional Falcon launch facility in 2014, Boca Chica has remained relatively dormant over the last three years, and it is truly exciting to see activity ramping up. There are admittedly significant barriers that will prevent SpaceX from effortlessly repurposing its Boca Chica pad for BFR, a much larger rocket. If SpaceX intends to do that, they will almost certainly need to pass a significantly updated FAA environmental impact review and account for any remediations that might be required. Still, that is a small ask for for Brownsville’s local government and Texas as a whole, both of which have clearly enjoyed and begun to benefit from SpaceX’s presence in the otherwise unknown area. SpaceX is unlikely to give up on Boca Chica in the near term, so long as Ms. Shotwell maintains her belief that it is effectively the perfect location for BFR launches.

Overall, Shotwell’s comments over the last several months and today in particular are increasingly encouraging, and things are likely to only speed up as 2018 progresses, allowing SpaceX to focus more and more of its expertise on BFR, BFS, and its South Texas testing and launch facilities.

That is my fear.
