Were California a Country It’d be the 17th Most Unequal Nation on Earth, Ahead of Mexico & Guatemala.

Californians love sermonizing on the plight of America’s poor and disenfranchised—if only penny-pinching republicans would shell out for a bigger welfare state then all our problems would be solved.  Why not build more homes for the homeless, or invest in better education for our kids?  The state can solve the problem of poverty, they argue.

And to be fair, they’ve put their money where their mouth is: over the last few decades California has built one of America’s most lavish welfare states.  There’s just one problem: it’s not working.

The sad truth of the matter is that California’s poverty rate is the highest in the country, at 20.6 percent.  This is based on data from the US Census Bureau, and modified so as to account for differences in the cost of living between states.  And if you’re a skeptical “progressive” then don’t worry, even Politifact confirmsthis finding.

So many homeless encampments a few miles from mansions and yet, there are no shelters available for these people.  A ten year wait in most shelters.

But they pride themselves on being a Sanctuary State.

Wine Country there in Nor Cal has been hiring illegals by the truck load to do the farm work.

5 or 6 years ago there was a story that Wine Country was in trouble because the Illegals were self deporting back to Mexico for better wages.

California is uneven, for certain. Orange County is just over 3 million. Several billionaires and homeless not far away.

I used to be somewhat amazed to see people going through trash in the ally behind very expensive homes on the sand on "the peninsula." (Balboa Peninsula)

Need any more proof that the Dems don't give a Hoot about the people they're always in a rage about? The little people?

It's never about anything but themselves and their Unions/Money.

The fact is most "homeless" are drug addicts and alcoholics. A series of articles for the OC Register, interviewed over 1,000 homeless on the Santa Ana River.

They were asked "if help were offered, would they accept it?"

Out of over 1,000 questioned, 90% said they did not want help; they were okay as they were.

"Help" means rules, and rules mean no drugs, curfew etc. As it is, they are free to steal things, break into homes, deal and use drugs.

If caught, they are out in hours, with paper citations.

Geez. Invite all the garbage from Mexico to show up in your state and then be surprised that your state has turned into Mexico. Shocking.

Much of what you say is true, but something is very wrong in California.

Yeah, homeless flock there because they don't freeze to death in winter.

But can't California do SOMETHING?  I mean at least provide shelters for them to sleep in at night.

Yep.  Wonder how many of those homeless are benefiting from the sanctuary city status?

What do you want any state to "do about it?"

Any cop today says "it isn't against the law" to be homeless. That wasn't always true, for there used to be laws against vagrancy.

There also used to be laws here, against sleeping in vehicles overnight.

Finally many homeless are here, due to Obamacare which requires "Essential Health Benefits," including substance treatment.  Providers solicit (use headhunters) mainly addicts across the entire country, "hey want to go to Cali, free housing, free food, get clean, go to the beach, go to the gym, etc."

When treatment is over, they get dumped (curbed is the term.)

I do not expect Republicans to strip this from reimbursed "healthcare" now in view of the national panic over "opioid crisis" etc.

There are shelters all over the place. And because there are, it attracts more homeless from other states further increasing the demand for shelters. And once here, the perks and weather are better than where they came from so they don't leave.

Give away free hamburgers and see how long it takes you to have a serious shortage of hamburgers...

A decade or so ago Santa Cruz city government decided they were very compassionate so they organized and widely advertised a "homeless convention". Homeless came from all over the county to attend. And then they didn't leave because they liked it there... It was a disaster for Santa Cruz and they are still dealing the consequences to this day.

I was in San Diego for business meetings in 1998 and 2005.  Both times, the Gaslamp District was overrun with homeless and panhandlers.  Don't know if it's gotten better or worse, since then.

Feinstein and Pelosi's Home Town is such a disaster there's an actual Human Poop On The Streets map of it online.

Obviously, the wealthy in California aren't paying nearly enough in taxes. Otherwise, why would there be so much poverty?  :nometalk:
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

You should look at school data.  High drop out rates.  54% of the total school population was Hispanic/Latino.  And that is the story.

The State of California is in a race with the city of Seattle to the pits of Progressivism Hell it seems
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

The big story here is the bill circulating in the CA legislature that would force corporations to give half of their brand new tax break to the state, instead of to their employees.

The leftist slugs may just go too far in the mind of the California voter yet. The working voter, that is.

They'll howl Racist even louder and have their House Rats tack on California Special Fiscal Relief riders into every bill they can sneak them into.

Many of those Hispanics are grandchildren of Hispanics people I grew up with.

For those not aware, California and Texas have had lots of native born Hispanic citizens dating to the early 1800s when the Anglos went there.
