Now Hear This: Ringing in Your Ears Could Mean Serious Illness

    By Ariana Marini

If you hear a persistent sound in your ears that's not coming from your surroundings, you may have tinnitus. Maybe you hear the classic ringing tone, or something that's more like whistling, roaring, or buzzing. The sound could even have the same rhythm as your heartbeat. For some people tinnitus comes and goes, while others hear it all the time. It can be a minor annoyance or severely disrupt day-to-day activities for the 50 million people in the United States who experience it, according to the American Tinnitus Association.

Most of the time, ringing in your ears is the result of an abnormality in your auditory or nervous system, according to Payal Anand, AuD, assistant director at the audiology clinic at UCSF Medical Center. But it can also be caused by certain medications such as anti-inflammatories, sedatives, and antidepressants.

While it's not a disease in itself, tinnitus is a symptom for many conditions, usually nothing to be alarmed about. In some cases, however, it may be a sign of one of these 10 serious conditions.
