Power outage at Atlanta airport causes 'pandemonium,' grounds flights
Fox News, Dec 17, 2017, Alexandra Deabler, Nicole Darrah

A complete power outage at the nation’s busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, grounded flights Sunday afternoon, threatening to cause a holiday travel nightmare for fliers across the country just over a week before Christmas.

Airport officials said in a news release the power outage has forced the Federal Aviation Administration to suspend outgoing flights and implement a "ground stop" for incoming flights, which "means that flights headed to Atlanta are held on the ground at their departure airport."

I'd hate to be stuck on that train between terminals.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

I have had a rule for over 40 years.  If you have to fly Over the Holidays Fly on Christmas Day.  Return on New Years Day.  Two best travel days of the year.

Never ever set foot in no airport anytime 7 days before.

We've been flying out of that airport for years (before the new airport and after).   It's has always been chaotic.

Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport crippled by power outage
CNN, Dec 17, 2017 Updated 9:31 PM

<snip>

The outage, which affected all airport operations, started with a fire in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said. The fire's intensity damaged two substations serving the airport, including the airport's "redundancy system" that should have provided backup power, and delayed efforts to contain it, Reed said. Full power was expected to be restored by midnight.

"We certainly understand that the outages have caused frustration and anger and were doing everything we can to get folks back home right away," he said, adding that the fire's cause is still unknown.

Atlanta is the heart of the US air transport system, and the disruption led to flight delays and cancellations across the country.

Here are the latest developments:

People were on planes on the tarmac for seven hours.  People walked for as much as an hour in the dark train tunnels to get out.  Everything went off all at once.  No backup anything came on.

Our United pilot family member must be back in Ohio on Tuesday to go back to flying airplanes.  He can take the jump seat in the cockpit of the Dallas flight to get back.  His wife and seventeen yr. old daughter may be with us longer as they are on stand by for that Tuesday flight out of Dallas and seats on the plane may be taken up with people trying to get to their destination from Atlanta.  People are going to be moved around for days on flights they did not intend to take.  What I heard out of Atlanta was it would take a week for airlines to straighten this out - get planes running as usual.

It's a Delta hub.  How did anyone even notice a difference?

Chick-fil-A broke from tradition and opened on a Sunday — and there's an incredible backstory
    Kate Taylor

With the world's busiest airport closed for hours without power, stranding thousands of passengers, Chick-fil-A broke one of its core rules this past weekend and served fried chicken on a Sunday.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport lost power Sunday afternoon, causing more than 1,000 flights to be grounded. As day turned to night, the city of Atlanta turned to Chick-fil-A to help craft a solution.

Atlanta's mayor, Kasim Reed, called the fast-food chain at about 10 p.m. and asked for assistance, a company spokeswoman, Amanda Hannah, told Business Insider in an email.

Chick-fil-A is not open on Sunday because of the founder's religious beliefs. But on this Sunday, Chick-fil-A employees "immediately mobilized," Hannah said, making sandwiches and delivering them to an emergency operations center to be distributed to stranded passengers.    ...   More at Business Insider

I f'n HATE Hartsfield!

You're not alone.  I've heard many complaints about that airport.  I was there once, but only to change planes.  For once, my next flight was only 2 gates away from my arrival gate, so I didn't get to experience Hartsfield's "ambiance."

I refuse to go there.  Won't fly Delta because of it.
