Love it or hate it, Monopoly was probably a staple of your childhood — the star of countless sleepovers, play dates, or family game nights.

However, it turns out that you may have been playing the board game incorrectly your entire life, and it's all thanks to one innocuous tweet.

On Monday, BuzzFeed writer Lauren Yapalater came across a Twitter thread in which people were sharing the "most trivial hill" they were willing to die on.

And one Twitter user said this: "When someone lands on a property in Monopoly & they don't buy it, IT GOES TO AUCTION for any player to buy. IT. IS. IN. THE. RULES."

. . . It's a simple rule that changes everything. First, it speeds up the game, saving players a ton of time. Second, the auction allows players to buy properties for less than what they would usually pay. And third, since the person who originally landed on the property space can also bid in the auction, that player can make a strategic decision to send it to auction and buy it at a lower price.

So, of course, people are freaking out online . . .

Now they tell me!!!

I dunno. Might depend on how crazy the players are when it comes to auctions. Who knows?
They might actually drive the price of Mediterranean Avenue past the level of the Boardwalk . . .

I never cared whether I won or lost as long as in the end I owned the railroads.

I think we treated the "go to auction" rule as an optional rule when we played Monopoly as kids. However, every computerized version of Monopoly that I've played, from the PC version I bought in the mid-90s to the online versions available at various gaming sites, all use this rule, i.e., if you don't buy a property when you land on it, it goes to auction. So how is it people are so unaware of it?
Let it burn.

When I was kids people insisted on playing the "Free Parking" version, where all tax money went into the middle of the board and if you landed on "FP" you won it.

It really ruined the strategy and nuance of the game. But then, I'm pretty OCD when it comes to following rules in games.

When I was a kid, I knew all about that rule, I don't understand why there's this great big giant mystery.  The problem with the rule is that it's impossible to follow unless you have at least three people playing.  I played just my brother all the time and the auction rule made absolutely no sense:  If I turned down the sale, who would my brother bid against?  Me?  Himself?  Boardwalk would go for $1.  (Like Newsweek magazine.)

That got started because there was a similar competing game on the market back in the 60's (I can't remember the name and Google isn't helping me.  "Finance?") that did have the rule about paying out to free parking.

I found a way to make Parcheesi take all day.  I called it Socialist Parcheesi, where a requirement of the game was for everybody to gang up and keep somebody else from getting their tokens into the Home stretch.  People would ignore their own tokens close to home if somebody else looked like they might get ahead, to make sure they got knocked back to Base.  Cheating on the dice-roll was encouraged.

I learned to play Monopoly by playing against a Univac mainframe in 1980. It bought every property it could get, even if it had to borrow against its existing properties.

Sure, eventually, but like I said...it took all freakin' day, which is a lot for a game that usually takes an hour or two.  It was kind of a lesson for my kid, that if you are envious and seek mainly to hold others back you will never get ahead yourself.

We played it as  Ghettopoly.  Buy stolen properties, then build crack houses and projects.  No go to jail just paying protection fees and getting car jacked, that was the luxery tax!  If you don't have the money that you owe to the loan shark you might just land yourself in do not pas goal do not collect your weed and go directly to the Emergency Room.

Board Contents:

Game Board, Loan Shark Tray, 40 Crack Houses, 17 Projects, Pink Slip Cards, Ghetto Stash and Hustle Cards, 7 Game pieces (Pimp, Hoe, 40 oz, Machine Gun, Marijuana Leaf, Basket Ball and Crack), Counterfeit Money, and 2 Dice
