Yes, I believe the explanation was that Crosby was the best match for this particular donor liver.  That woman's husband might have technically been on the transplant list longer, but he wasn't a match. 

I only brought up the controversy as a point of history.  I can't be sure that Crosby changed his ways as far as drugs are concerned, but I have read that he was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic and lost some weight.  Haven't seen him lately though.

My own BIL is a liver transplant success story. His wife is an RN, and they literally waited years for a good organ match.

I think 3 times they rushed to Phoenix (2.5 hours from home in Flagstaff) only to learn the doctor had deemed the organ match not good enough.

A friend of my wife donated his kidney to a complete stranger out of the goodness of his heart. Less than a year later the guy who donated it to was dead.

His family was probably overjoyed that they got to spend those additional few months with him but I cannot think that it was a huge waste. I'd donate for somebody I knew, sure, but not for a stranger.

Thank God your BIL finally received a liver.  A friend of mine died waiting for a new heart.  There is so much of a demand, but only a small supply of organs. 

Because of my friend, I'm an organ donor and it is so designated on my state ID...although as I told the lady at the DMV, most of my organs probably aren't useable.  But maybe someone can use my corneas or skin.  I don't care.  Whatever piece of me they want, they can have.

My first nephrologist (kidney specialist) donated a kidney to one of her own patients.  The patient's family and friends had volunteered to donate, but none of them were a good match.  Meanwhile, the patient was getting worse, so there was no time to wait for a cadaver donor  So the doctor decided to have herself tested.  She was a match.  Didn't even have to think about it.  Surgery was performed right away.  That was 18 years ago.  Both doctor and patient are still alive and kicking.

When my next younger brother was diagnosed with leukemia at about age 28, I remember the three of us (other younger brother) going to a facility to be tested for bone marrow compatibility, since that was the best treatment.

Alas there were no close matches in the family, he did not get a transplant, and died 9 years later. Of those years, 8.5 were good, but the ending was awful.

Five years later, Rod Carew the Anaheim baseball player, searched desperately for suitable donors for his daughter, who would also die for lack of a transplant.

BTW Carew is/was a truly good man.

The loss of my brother was devastating to our entire family. He left a 13 year old son, that suffered for lack of a good Dad.

As a guideline, the medical profession will NOT waste a donor organ, on somebody that is still drinking and/or using drugs.

The organs are NOT interchangable. I think it UNLIKELY the medical profession would put a rich patient ahead of anybody for the sake of any factor, besides the suitability of the organ match.

It is science.

Mostly true,but anybody that doesn't think a clinic will bump someone wealthy to the top of the list if a donor organ comes in that matches their blood type if the wealthy person "just happens" to make a huge contribution to the facility.

Business is business,and even doctors realize that the more money their clinics take in,the more "free" operations/procedures they can do for the truly needy. That's  pretty much all the justification anybody needs.

From my limited technical understanding Crosby MUST have changed his lifestyle (not politics), or he would be dead by now. Before and after his transplant.

In know for a fact, the medical community assures themselves, the patients have reformed their lifestyles, BEFORE getting transplants.

Greg Allman had a liver transplant, and lived about 5-6 years until dying from some other ailment.

Are there exceptions? Probably.
