The United States Does Not Have More Mass Shootings Than Europe

Time for the old myth to die. The difference is simply in media reporting.

In the aftermath of a tragedy like the mass shooting in Las Vegas, political claims are tossed around rather quickly, and with little regard to the facts. Advocates of gun prohibition are quick to claim that the U.S. is uniquely prone to such events because of the Second Amendment’s protection of the right to keep and bear arms.

This claim, however, is false. In fact, as figures from the Crime Prevention Research Center show, “there were 55 percent more casualties per capita from mass public shootings in [the European Union] than U.S. from 2009-15.”

In other words, the opposite is true. There are actually more occurrences of, and deaths from, mass shootings in Europe than the United States, on a per capita basis.
Mass shootings are less common in the United States compared to Europe.....

A few years ago I had a "Bookface Friend" who lived in Netherlands.  ("Had.")  He used to go on and on about their superior political system in EU, from their vaunted Socialist Heathcare to, yes, very tight controls on firearms.  The guy was literally too terrified to even consider a trip to the US, even if he had to for his company.  He would have quit his job first, he was so sure we're all cruising around, shooting up the cities.  I couldn't talk him out of this notion.

The ironic part is, his Grilfriend is from the Philippines, and he travels there all the time.     Maybe they have fewer murders there?

A few years ago I had a "Bookface Friend" who lived in Netherlands.  ("Had.")  He used to go on and on about their superior political system in EU, from their vaunted Socialist Heathcare to, yes, very tight controls on firearms.  The guy was literally too terrified to even consider a trip to the US, even if he had to for his company.  He would have quit his job first, he was so sure we're all cruising around, shooting up the cities.  I couldn't talk him out of this notion.

The ironic part is, his Grilfriend is from the Philippines, and he travels there all the time.     Maybe they have fewer murders there?

It is all about the media reporting and stereotypes. There are places in the EU that are very bad in regards to mass shootings, usually organized crime related, but they don't get international attention because they already have the regulations that 'should' stop them (according to big government types). Also, often organized crime murders don't warrant the same attention as some nutcase. But I would feel safer on the streets of New Orleans at night more than I would some places in the Ukraine or Czech Republic (all places I love BTW, so nothing personal).

If “United States Does Not Have More Mass Shootings Than Europe”, I wonder why the article is discussing the per capita rate of mass shootings rather than the raw numbers of mass shootings.  It would be interesting to see which country really does have the most mass shootings (versus who has the most mass shootings per capita).

Agree, I'm sorry, this is just a statistics shell game. I'm sure our gun death rate etc. is much higher than Europe. That said, I've lived in some American cities high on the crime scale but it never really affected us.

It should be in there.  And, in a country as small as Norway, it would skew the numbers significantly.

I've heard similar things like this online. I remember hearing a guy visiting the US in the 70's from the UK, who was so sure he was going to be attacked he had his fist balled up when he got off the plane. This was a guy telling his story online.
