The cost-cutting strategy continues at Sears with another 63 stores targeted for closure early next year.

Emblematic of the struggle facing U.S. department stores, Sears Holdings has already closed more than 350 Sears and Kmart stores this year. An additional 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores will be closing in late January 2018, the company said Thursday.

...

The 63 stores will remain open during the holiday season and employees at the closing stores will get severance pay and an opportunity to apply for other jobs within the retail chains. "Liquidation sales will begin as early as November 9 at these closing stores," the company said.

Thanks, @Fishrrman

One of the closing Kmarts is in my area.  When it goes, that will be the last one close by.  There is one Sears left -- in the mall where I go walking. Surprised that store has been spared.

If Sears can't make it in Greeley Colorado or Cheyenne Wyoming, they are likely beyond the tipping point.

It informs me that Sears has simply not kept pace in terms of products, marketing, merchandising, general retail practices etc.

Both Greeley and Cheyenne have Home Depot, Kohl's btw.

I doubt many of you know that JC Penny started in Wyoming.

And there it is, the one in my town...Wards Road, Lynchburg.  Somehow it always escaped the closings and I never understood why.   It's an old, outdated store, kind of junky...like stepping into a time machine.   When Walmart opened up down the road, it was death for Kmart.

I have a memory of tearing loose from my mom's hand outside that store when I was little, and running across the parking lot.  She caught me and spanked my butt good, right there.

Just built a brand new and huge Sears store here.

Those that can't keep up are doomed to failure, just a few I have seen:
Zody's
White Front
Gemco
Fedco
The Treasury
Montgomery Wards
Circuit City
Sam Goody's
The Warehouse
I'm sure everyone can easily ad to the list. Sears, Kmart, JC Penney's, Radio Shack, they all died years ago they just refuse to accept it.
