No one disputes that illegal immigration is not in America's interest. But the traditional GOP view was that legal immigration, with the goal of filling jobs that employers need, fueled economic growth and ultimately lifted all boats.
I remain sympathetic to this traditional view, and as much as I applaud some of President Trump's policies, his nativist base of supporters is pushing him toward a near-zero immigration policy that will retard growth.
