  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Hurricane Ophelia became a "rare" Category 3 about 220 miles south of the Azores islands as it heads towards Ireland and the United Kingdom, the National Hurricane Center announced Saturday morning.

The storm, which has 115 mph sustained winds, became the sixth major hurricane of the season, which ends on Nov. 30. According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, this makes Ophelia a "major" hurricane capable of "devastating damage."

May the wind be to their back.

I remember Chuck Watson from a now defunct forum. Good guy.

There is no doubt that I missed it the past...but is Ireland really a hurricane target?

The further north it goes the weaker it will get. Very unlikely to be a hurricane by the time it travels that far north.

Rarely, but it does happen.

The following links lets you select years, strength, etc.

https://coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/

Select all, all, all....

You even see some hitting Norway, Iceland, etc...

If I used it correctly, it looks like exactly one category 1 hurricane has struck the UK (as far as these tracking records go). It clipped the north western edge of Ireland. I didn't see any hurricane strikes of Iceland or Norway. The gray tracking lines are for "ET" which appears to be something less than a tropical depression but that isn't clear (to me).

They do happen and they've had worse in the British Isles.  This one happened before anyone was talking about climate change.

I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

It looks like Ireland is being hit by a category 1 hurricane. It looks like this is the second time this has happened as far as official tracking goes. The previous time was apparently 1961... The year I was born...
