Hawaiians are terrified a missile strike from the totalitarian state would completely wipe out the island.

Officials are advising citizens to seek shelter underground in the event North Korea bombs the island with nuclear weapons.

But state lawmakers and military chiefs have admitted the fallout shelter infrastructure of the island is woefully unprepared for an attack.Democratic representative for Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard, told Fox News: “There is a need for state leaders to take this threat seriously.

“A lot has changed since the 1980s, when the emergency management plan was put in place.

“With the threat today, it's likely we would have just minutes of warning of an imminent attack. Going to a shelter may or may not be feasible.”

Kim Jong-un has tested five nuclear weapons in the past 16 months.

Experts believe Pyongyang has the capability to hit Hawaii with an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – which has a minimum range of around 3,400km.A chilling death map revealed what would happen if North Korea dropped nuclear weapons on Hawaii.

Major general Arthur Logan, director of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, said: “During the Cold War days, there were multiple days to warn people to hunker down into fallout shelters, whereas today, you have minutes.

“Your reaction has got to be taking care of yourself and those around you. You are now that first responder.”

Because Hawaii is the closest US territory to North Korea, defence chiefs fear Jong-un could strike the island first if war breaks out.
