Man in custody after detonating bomb during traffic stop

Jason P. Schaefer, 26, was injured when he set off an explosive device during a traffic stop near Portland on Wednesday
The FBI had been executing a federal warrant on Schaefer's apartment in search of explosive devices when he fled
After a pursuit, a detective was able to stop Schaefer in the middle of a road
Authorities say he then detonated a handheld explosive device inside his car
The detective suffered minor injuries in the explosion
Schaefer was flagged to the FBI last month when agents found he had been buying items used to make bombs that could be detonated remotely

Jason P. Schaefer, 26, was taken into FBI custody in Oregon on Wednesday after detonating an explosive device during a traffic stop. He is pictured above in a prior mugshot from May when he pleaded guilty to possessing body armor

Like those who have posted comments say, this looks antifa to me but...detonating it? That sounds like Islam but we know from appearances, nothing can be ruled out. He already has a record and had body-armor as well in the car.

" Schaefer was flagged to the FBI last month when agents found he had been buying items used to make bombs that could be detonated remotely  "

That is a pretty low threshold.   It happened to be correct but seems to indicate they are watching what we buy online.

I would bet my house that there are certain items that trigger observation when purchased; pressure cookers for example.  Don't we already know that text messages are being scanned?  I think the abbreviation PLF draws attention to texts, which I get a chuckle out of because it is one of my aunt's initials and when my mom and I text about her we use the initials instead of spelling out her name.

Unless you buy it for cash somewhere without cameras, there is a record of it.

So my purchase of 10lbs of powdered aluminium might have thrown flags?

Nah, they probably think you're using it to make homemade antiperspirant.

If I have the story correct and this is only from the article,

They were searching the suspect's premises (not an ordinary traffic stop),  he took off running and it sounds like got in his car and went which caused a pursuit and then, allegedly, after being stopped, he detonated this small bomb.

Obviously, all of this is suspicious and as said, apparently, he is already a felon. So, he might have been watched on those grounds.

Yep, I'm using the $500 in epoxy I bought  as the binder

For the FBI agents monitoring I did not buy powdered aluminum, it was magnesium and is used in my survival kit as a aid in starting fires.

And the epoxy was not for antiperspirant.    Its for my kayak which you can see in my profile pic.

You all have that right, it seems if one wanted to get arrested, hang out in a forum, shady forums that is, not like this one, ask some questions, go to a hardware store to buy some certain items or send certain pms, a person might be able to get themselves into a trap.

But... this dude did not appear to handle himself well.

Body armor being illegal for a felon to own? Probably a state law.  I did not know that but I gather the police had a valid search warrant.

Say, I've noticed you're really coming along on that.  Any chance you can post the sequence photos in The Lounge when you're done, or maybe a free-standing thread in Sports?  It looks awesome.

Well, he could have just Googled it, like the fellow in this story:

I got curious about that.  Remarkably, body armor is legal to own just about anywhere, and restrictions against felons having it is more rare than you would think.  NY, of course, is debating making it illegal for everybody.

@thackney that's why I had to start using the Harvey avatar. Thought it would turn her off but it got her more excited. Going to try Steve Buscemi next and see if that works.
