North Korea has targeted American power companies for cyberattack, according to a report Tuesday.
Hackers linked to Kim Jong Un’s regime would target people with spear phishing emails that trick recipients into downloading malware, cybersecurity company FireEye said in a report obtained by NBC News.
While there’s no evidence the hackers were successful, FireEye says American electric companies could’ve been targeted because of increased tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.
The company’s findings come after NBC reported in August that U.S. officials fear the isolated nation could launch cyberattacks on American infrastructure.
“Phishing attacks are something that electric companies prepare for and deal with on a regular basis, often in coordination with security experts and industry stakeholders,” Scott Aaronson, a security official at the Edison Electric Institute, told NBC.
