I've had long bouts of not being able sleep and taking melatonin before I go to bed seems to help significantly. I'm chicken to stop taking it because I don't want to revisit not sleeping most of the night which is really miserable. I've had serious permanent health issues start not long after having going several weeks of maybe 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night.

There's going to have to be some actual evidence of long term consequences that are worse than not sleeping to stop.
