  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Catalonia will declare independence from Spain within days, the region’s leader said late Tuesday after the Spanish king made a televised speech accusing secessionists of fracturing society.

Carles Puigdemont pledged to defy Madrid and implement the results of Sunday's banned independence referendum which went ahead despite a violent crackdown by Spanish police that left 900 people injured.

"We are to declare independence 48 hours after all the official results are counted," he said in an interview with the BBC. "This will probably finish once we get all the votes in from abroad at the end of the week and therefore we shall probably act over the weekend or early next week."

Catalonia is also a big chunk of Spain's economy, and I can't see them letting go of that easily.

With what's happening with the Kurds, Brexit, Catalonia, and the Calexit proponents, I'm starting to wonder if this is the new Arab spring.

I don't want my taxes going up to make up for the cost of that move.

The numbers I've seen show California is a larger consumer of taxes than contributor.   Add on that many companies would move out of CA and its a win win.

@driftdiver

Where's that?!

I think it's pretty well accepted that they pay in more than they get back.  I'd like to see something to the contrary.

You haven't accounted for the near monopoly on vegetables and port access they could charge the US.

I discard the first article as it is produced by the state of California and has to be biased.

Everyone can juggle those figures to produce the desired effect they wish.

As an example, the methodology I see used in the Atlantic source was based upon only federal income tax revenue collected in each state.  This reflects only 38% of total federal revenues.

I don't buy that article considering the state is run by nutjob socialists.   I don't have the other articles handy but have seen some that pointed out the atlantic's chart was missing a lot of items.

As for veggies, most of ours come from mexico.   We could still buy them and may or may not pay whatever tariffs they want.
