Here We Go Again! (Update Rollback #4)
« on: October 01, 2017, 12:04:27 am »
Yesterday a notice popped up stating that security updates could Not be installed unless the latest version of Windows 10 was installed!

Hoping against hope and against my knowing better (through the previous three 'updates'), I went ahead and allowed the update!

Even after months of research and the installing of software that was supposed to prevent the previous disasters (display, completely unusable because of smeared colors and unreadable text) ... Nothing Has Changed!!

The same messed up display even after trying various 'fixes' and Microsoft suggestions!

I have read that computers with AMD graphics are having various problems but as of now .. I can't find a solution?

The funny part?

When I do the update and the graphics are bad, I go to the device manager, uninstall the display adapter and restart the pc.

Microsoft automatically installs a display adapter that clears everything up!

The Not So Funny Part?

Within 30 seconds, Microsoft deletes whatever adapter they installed (the good one) and reverts back to the crappy one!!

Try as I might, I can't prevent them from doing this!

I also suspect that more than just the display adapter is the problem because I have tried a dozen different ones that are compatible with my computer and none of them work!
(All of them from either Lenovo or AMD)

So ... Rollback #4!

My pc is a Lenovo desktop.

Processor: AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G (Cores: 2)
Memory: 11 Gbytes (DDR3)

Video: AMD Radeon R7 Graphics (1 Gb)

Disk: ST2000DM001-1ER164 (2 Tb)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

One of many reasons I refuse to use Windows 10. They force updates on you giving you no control over what is installed or when. If the "update" is a problem sucks to be you is their attitude.

I don't know why any business and/or professional would use Windows 10 losing basic control over YOUR OWN computer that you make a living from.

Try installing the AMD driver auto-detect tool:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/auto-detect-tool

It should install the proper driver.
If not, on the same page, follow the instructions to get the correct (manual installation) distributable driver.

Windows should leave an OEM driver alone unless it thinks it has a newer one.

Did that long ago.
(After the first rollback)

Installed the driver and nothing changed.

As I said, I have tried Every driver, every tool and every suggestion by Microsoft and forum member with zero results.

I don't expect any solutions because apparently ... "There Isn't Any!"

I just needed to B!t¢h!

So ... Rollback #4!

Not mine but if it was I would have chunked that video card long ago and replaced it with a new one!  Not worth the hassel IMHO.

@mrclose

I'm a Linux guy.  I've barely used windows.  I really don't care which OS you choose.  I'm not an advocate, I just like what I like.

That said, if I was in your position and wanted to use windows 10, I'd install a linux version (probably one of the ubuntu LTS line), and then install windows in a virtual machine (VM).  There's a small learning curve, but once you're over it when you want to update windows you simply make a copy of the VM (a file) and if something breaks you just go back to the previous version -- no issues with video drivers or whatever.

Sorry to hear about about your troubles, and I know that you don’t want to hear this but, Mac. Problem solved.

I had a Mac until it became obsolete and I couldn't upgrade any further.  I had to go with a Lenovo because Macs got too pricey.

We own a business that provides IT services to small and medium sized businesses.  I am also seeing Win 10 update issues with Lenovo laptops with AMD video and processors.  If you have a desktop you can do as suggested and replace the video card.  Just FYI my brand new high end desktop refused to boot after the last update.  None of the recovery options worked.  I had to reload the OS.  I have a new laptop with Win 7 Pro and  Surface with Win 8.1 so I have options, but I can understand your frustration.

Thank You for your responses.

I've tried everything except the new video card.

As I noted in my post ... I believe that there is a problem, not only with the on-board display but a problem elsewhere?

For instance:
If I right-click on the desktop and select AMD RADEON SETTINGS , the following pops up:

(missing?)

Even though the display is great looking:

And the device manager shows:

I have had contact with both lenovo and AMD.
AMD has heard about the problem but has no answers!

I'm at the point of just praying that microsoft wont be limiting the number of times I will be able to do the rollbacks!

Not Microsoft? They might have for you a driver in pretty pink and with a bow on top.

Processor: AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7

That's an APU. There is no video card but an equivalent card can be added if this is truly a desktop.

Edit: Or, come to think of it, if there is a separate video card, in addition to the R7 integrated graphics, then that should show in Device Manager.

It's the kind of problem makes you want to buy Intel in the first place.  Little help, now though.....

It seems MS does all their debugging on Intel, and AMD can go hang.

I've had no problem with AMD.

I think more info is needed.

@mrclose

Is there a separate video card? If so then is it showing in Device Manager? If a separate video card is present and not showing in Device Manager then you might want to remove that card to see what happens with just the R7 GPU. If you do no fancy graphics work then that GPU should be all you need.

No (stand alone) video card.

I've tried everything.

The update is an update for everything including the chipset as far as I can tell.

The average user just wants to turn a computer on, use it, turn it off.

My experience with windows has always been one of complexity, crash, cash, confusion, fear and loathing.

Enough!

Most windows users don't have the degree of problems we're seeing here.  This is almost certainly a defect of some some sort in the underlying hardware.

Everyone always seems to have trouble when MS does their updates.

This forced update seems to be causing more than usual for just about everyone.
(I have no idea if this is the "creators Update" or the "Cumulative Update" because ... I AM SICK OF IT ALL ... ARGGGGGGG!) :silly:

It seems that the most trouble comes to those with the AMD innards.

Nah. I am running two AMD A10s... No worries.  But I really can't recall if I am running any Raedon anymore...

EDIT: Whoops! Only one A10, the other is a Phenom II with 4200 Raedon... But, like I said, no worries

All of these updates played nice when installed but .. I have no clue as to what they are!

MS always has names for their crappy updates but only give you numbers when they are installed!

I have no time or patience to look up the update that is killing my display!
(Obviously it's not one of these)
