Tennessee church shooting leaves 1 dead, several wounded, officials say Fox News

At least one woman was shot and killed and several others were wounded on Sunday when a gunman opened fire inside a Tennessee church, Nashville police said.

The shooter was also shot and taken into to the hospital, according to the Nashville Fire Department.

Nashville police received calls about a shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch just after 11 a.m., officials told Fox News. The church is about 30 minutes southeast of Nashville.

"This is a mass casualty situation. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals. The majority are older adults," Nashville Fire Department wrote on Twitter.

Joseph Pleasant, a spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department, confirmed at least six people were shot and taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries were unclear at this time, but everyone except for one victim was over the age of 60.

Gunman was in his 20s, wearing a mask, and was stopped by a congregant who went to his car for a gun (gunman evidently shot himself and they held him at gunpoint).  Victims are all 60+.

At this point, one dead and seven wounded, including perp.

The dead woman was shot in the back,  then he rolled her over and shot her in the face. He ended up shooting himself in the leg.

A motive for the shooting has not been released. Samson will be taken into police custody and charged with murder and multiple counts of attempted murder after he leaves the hospital, according to police.   ...

According to police, the gunman shot himself after he was confronted by a church member who went to his car and retrieved a gun. The churchgoer has a permit to carry the handgun, authorities said.

“The gunman was wounded by a self-inflicted shot,” a police spokesman said. “He too has been taken to the hospital. One of the church members, upon seeing the gunman doing this action inside the church, ran up and confronted him. He was pistol-whipped by the gunman,” Aaron told reporters.

Police said the gunman then accidentally shot himself in the leg. The member of the church who confronted him was an usher, according to police. He has a permit to legally carry a handgun, and ran to his car to retrieve his gun after being struck by the shooter. He then went back into the church and held the shooter at gunpoint, police said.   ...

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known. He does not have any known ties to the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. ...

Melanie Smith Crow, 39, was shot and killed at church. A single mother of two, she was described as sweet and kind.

One of the victims was in more serious condition than the others. The victims include three women and three men, police said. Two were in critical condition and the others are stable, a Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesman told The Tennessean.

“The two critical patients suffered gunshot wounds to (their) chest and torso. The four other patients suffered gunshot wounds to their extremities,” John Howser told the newspaper.

The surviving victims include Minister Joey Spann, who is in critical condition, and his wife, Peggy Spann, 65, who is in stable condition. The other victims are now all in stable condition: Linda Bush, 68; William Jenkins, 83; Marlene Jenkins, 84; Katherine Dickerson, 64; and Robert Engle, 22, the usher who stopped the gunman, police said.

That was actually the page that came up when I clicked the earlier link you posted.  Not sure why.

I found that page to be a wealth of information.  One cannot imagine such horror happening in a small town church.  I'm almost glad the shooter is still alive as I would like to know what possessed him to come back two years later to kill the church members that I have no doubt were kind to him as witnessed by their behavior today.

One woman was killed and seven other people were hurt after a suspect identified as a Sudanese immigrant opened fire at a Tennessee church Sunday, police said, as the FBI confirmed it's launched a civil rights investigation into the shooting.

The suspect, 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, immigrated from Sudan two decades ago, police said. He's suspected of bringing at least two pistols and a mask to the predominantly white Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, southeast of Nashville, before Metropolitan Nashville Police Department tweeted that Samson had been released from the hospital and will be charged with murder and attempted murder.

"The Memphis FBI Field Office's Nashville Resident Agency, the Civil Rights Division, and the US Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Tennessee have opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, Tennessee. The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence," FBI Memphis told Fox News.

An usher, identified as Robert Engle, 22, confronted the gunman at one point and was pistol-whipped, causing "significant injury around his head," police added. They said Engle went to his own car, grabbed a pistol and headed back into the church.

Law enforcement confirmed Samson is a legal U.S. resident who immigrated from Sudan in 1996.

It was initially reported that the gunman shot himself, although police said it's unclear whether he shot himself or the gun unintentionally discharged during his scuffle with Engle.

Police said that Burnette Chapel churchgoers recognized Samson as attending their church one to two years ago, but noted he hadn't attended services "in quite a while."

The woman who was shot and killed in the church parking lot, identified as Melanie Smith, 39, was walking to her car when she was hit, police said.

The gunman, with his blue vehicle still running in the parking lot, then entered the back of the church and shot six people – three women and three men – who were rushed to the hospital, police said.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson called Engle a "hero" for his actions at the church Sunday.

Several witnesses claimed the shooter was wearing a “clown mask” when he opened fire, but police said what he wore more closely resembled a ski mask.
