Regulations Cut: Another Yuuuge Trump Promise Fulfilled
Investor's Business Daily, Sep 20, 2017

Regulation: It's no accident that Washington, D.C., has become known as the graveyard of promises. It's exceedingly rare that a promise made in the nation's capital is a promise kept. That's why it's great to report that President Trump has kept a big one — to cut two regulations for every new one passed.

<snip>

With a month to go in the fiscal year, the American Action Forum (AAF) decided to take a hard look at Trump's regulation-cutting pledge. Along with cutting regulations, the plan envisioned having a net new cost of regulation of $0 or less.

How did Trump do? "While there have been some hiccups, overall the Trump administration is on track to finish the first phase (of his regulatory reform program) with $645 million in net annual regulatory savings."

That might not sound like much in a federal budget usually denominated in the trillions of dollars. But consider this: During President Obama's years in office, more than  22,700 regulations were imposed on Americans at an astounding cost to American consumers, businesses and workers of "more than $120 billion each and every year," wrote Heritage Foundation Fellow Diane Katz earlier this year.

<snip>

That's why AAF analyst Dan Goldbeck was prompted to write, "From almost any perspective, President Trump's Executive Order 13,771, Reducing Regulation and Controlling Regulatory Costs, marked one of the most significant developments in regulatory policy in decades," adding that it was the "first time in United States history that the executive branch has established a regulatory budget."

This has had a major salutary effect on small business in particular. In August the National Federation of Independent Business, the nation's largest small-business organization, said its widely followed Small-Business Optimism Index reached 105.3 in August, the highest since 2006 and an 11% jump since the week before Donald "The Deregulator" Trump was elected.

I believe that a deep analysis would reveal secondary and tertiary costs to many of those regulations. In the extreme, if Jones is driven out of business then Jones' employees and suppliers take a hit which in turn affects yet others.

A conservative move, to be applauded.

Lower the regulations and the cost to comply with them, and let small businesses compete with larger ones.
It will make smaller businesses more competitive and force larger ones to become more innovative.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
