Is New York About To Face An Energy Crisis?
« on: August 24, 2017, 03:54:38 pm »
Amid the fracking boom that brought natural gas prices to historic lows and led to the transition of a lot of power generation capacity from coal to gas, New York and New England may face power shortages tantamount to an “energy crisis” due to state policies in recent years that have effectively banned fracking and blocked pipelines that would bring in gas, writes the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal.

Ever since the previous governor, David Paterson, introduced a moratorium on fracking in New York back in 2010, the state has become a poster city for the drive towards renewable energy, with Peterson’s successor, Andrew Cuomo, banning fracking indefinitely in 2014 and last year blocking the construction of the Constitution pipeline that would have transported natural gas from Pennsylvania to upstate New York and New England.

Between 2010 and 2015, WSJ’s editors note, natural gas production in New York fell by 50 percent, resulting in job losses, a decline in royalties for landowners, and lower revenues for local governments.

I love the brains we have on energy issues at TBR.
Our area here in southern NH just defeated a gas pipeline coming in. (Idiots) And  a big fight is going on about the northern pass project. Thats power coming down from Canada . If any of your states are low on morons we have plenty to spare .

No thanks, we have all we need populating Austin here in Texas.

When I lived in New England in the 80s, I recall the fights over the nuclear power plants at Shoreham on Long Island, and Seabrook in NH.

I also recall the fight to bring gas pipelines in from Canada due to NIMBYs.

With no coal on the horizon, the only thing left was to burn vast amounts of heating oil.

That option is sliding away as well now.

As the area of the US you are unfortunately in slides back into the dark ages, we down here will prosper with our lights on, our cars running, and our wells being drilled and pipelines built.

I heat with  Anthracite coal and wood but I will be paying a high electric bill summer and winter.

Combine that with the shutting down of NE Nuke plants.

Wait until Indian Point closes. It supplies roughly a third of the electricity that New York City consumes...

The more idiocy reigns up there, the stronger we become down here.

Let them close.

No worries.  It will be a win-win for the idiot left there.  They will merely, per usual, blame someone else for their failures and their ills.  In this case, they will blame Trump, specifically.  Any lives lost due to that lack of power will also be blamed on Trump and used in their "Impeach Trump" campaign.  It's how they roll.

But, but, but, I thought all those wind turbines and solar panels were gonna save the city from electricity shortages.........

The present NY state leadership does not have any orders in place for replacement electricity generation. There aren't even plans to investigate the issue at this time.
It is really rather childish of them...they envision replacing a third of their generating capacity partially with natural gas, partially with environmentalism (cutbacks, solar, wind, efficiency), partially with Canadian hydro power.

Because environmentalist goals are rarely met, because there are no natural gas projects in the works and because Canadian hydro power is very expensive, the most likely scenario is that the Indian Point closing date will be extended.

Then, the Indian Point plants will have to rely on short term contracts and operability re-evaluations. This will result in additional costs that will be passed on to the ratepayers.

All because NY state leadership is incompetent and spineless.
