Women who get migraine headaches with aura—flashes of light, bright spots, blind spots, tingling in the hands or face—have nearly twice the risk of the most common type of stroke, according to a new analysis. Worse yet, common lifestyle habits can hike a woman's risk exponentially.
"Women under 45 who get migraine headaches with aura have the increased ischemic stroke risk—particularly if they're smokers taking oral contraceptives," says study co-author José Biller, MD, a neurologist at Loyola University Medical Center.
