First Liberty Institute proudly announces the recipient of the 2017 Philip B. Onderdonk Jr. Religious Liberty Award Senator Ted Cruz

kelly-ted-cruz 2017 Philip B. Onderdonk Award Presented at the 2017 American Legion National Convention on August 23, 2017

The award is named after Philip B. Onderdonk, Jr., the National Judge Advocate of The American Legion and hero of religious liberty. Instead of a trophy, the recipient receives a Henry Repeating Arms Military Service Tribute Edition .22 caliber commemorative rifle, specially engraved for the award. The rifle is donated by Henry Repeating Arms, a strong supporter of our nation’s military service members and veterans.

First Liberty Institute bestows this award each year to one exceptional individual for their efforts in the fight for religious liberty. This year, First Liberty is proud to recognize Senator Ted Cruz. While in private practice, Senator Cruz—one of the highest regarded attorneys in America—donated his time to partner with First Liberty and The American Legion on behalf of veterans and veteran’s groups with religious liberty issues of critical importance. His efforts played a leading role in:

Saving the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial at the U.S. Supreme Court and beyond, when one person complained and sued to tear it down.

Restoring Memorial Day prayer, and the right of families to hear comforting phrases such as “God bless you” at veterans’ funerals, when these expressions were banned by Dept. of Veterans Affairs officials at the Houston National Cemetery.

Like The American Legion, freedom—and especially religious freedom—has a great champion in Senator Ted Cruz.

For his tireless efforts on behalf of veterans, the protection of their monuments and memorials, and his commitment to the cause of religious freedom, First Liberty is proud to present Senator Ted Cruz with the 2017 Philip B. Onderdonk Jr. Religious Liberty Award.....
