Low-calorie pizza and burgers won’t fix our child obesity crisis

By Tom Sanders

Officials charged with keeping the nation in good shape have said they want to cut calories in pizzas, burgers and ready meals to help tackle child obesity in England.

The food industry welcomed the guidance, from Public Health England (PHE), possibly because it can make more money from selling smaller portions with fewer calories. But the response from scientists and consumer groups has been lukewarm.

I can fix it.

Take away their cell phones and video games then teach them to ride a bike.

Amen.

Another thing: Unfortunately, with all the school consolidations going on, few children walk to school anymore. Instead, they ride many miles on buses.  I remember walking at least a mile to middle school and high school (yes, I know, uphill both ways), then the school board decided we should ride the bus - even though no child ever had gotten hurt walking to school.

By the time I was a teenager in the early 80s I must have been doing 50 or 60 miles per day on my 10 speed  just going from place to place. I was rural so visiting friends was usually 4 or 5 miles one way plus whatever running around we did.

And our parents called us lazy.  :silly:
