Six Vietnamese killed by US war-era bomb

Six Vietnamese villagers, including three children, were killed Friday when a US war-era bomb exploded in a mountainous area along the country's south central coast, state media reported.

Early reports said authorities believe the ordnance detonated after villagers discovered it in their farmland in Khanh Hoa province.

"The initial reason for the blast, which killed six, was that people were cutting open the 105 mm shell", reported VGPNews, the government's online mouthpiece.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

bomb:  an explosive device fused to detonate under specified conditions

Unexploded ordnance (UXO, sometimes abbreviated as UO), unexploded bombs (UXBs), or explosive remnants of war (ERW) are explosive weapons (bombs, shells, grenades, land mines, naval mines, cluster munition, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation, sometimes many decades after they were used or discarded.

Well there was the problem right there.  Everyone know the proper way to open up a 105 round is with a oxy acetylene torch and a sledge.

They probly fergot to get their bottles refilled. And junior wasn't there. He'd have just unscrewed the fuze head, propped the round in the camp fire and checked with a long twig to see when the TNT was melted. Then get big bro to get it outta the fire an pour out the TNT.

Or the fuze threads were frozen tite and they didn't have any liquid wrench.

Their problem was not testing it first.

It's a sad story, but why on Earth were they trying to cut it open?

Is there a Darwin Group Award?
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.
