At some point in 2019 (if not sooner) a Republican Senator may walk into the Oval Office and say to President Trump: “Mr. President, we don’t have the votes,” at which point the Trump presidency will end in a resignation or a conviction in the Senate.

This scenario actually occurred forty-three years ago this summer when Republican Senator Barry Goldwater walked into the Oval Office and told Republican President Richard Nixon that they didn’t have the votes in the Senate to save his presidency.

Doesn't the House impeach and the Senate does the trial?    I'm a little fuzzy but apparently not as much as Newsweek.  A normally reliable newsource.   /s

Whatever else people think of the republicans in Congress, they aren't going to vote to get rid of Trump unless there is evidence of Nixonian perfidy.  Perhaps one or two of the liberal ones would, but not enough to put Trump in serious jeopardy.

Of course it's based on the assumption that they win the house in 2018, and that impeachment then is a given. They'll promise impeachment to fire up the base but that could backfire and cost them some of the red-leaning districts they would have a shot at if impeachment wasn't their main issue. And some of the ones they do win narrowly may not be all that keen on the idea. Also, as much as the base hates Trump, I have to think they'd rather run against him than Pence in 2020. When you're blinded by anger and hatred it's easy to make mistakes...
