President Trump can rename the aircraft carrier USS John Stennis, which honors a 20th-century racist. He was a mere politician who never served in the armed forces.

    Stennis was a zealous supporter of racial segregation. He signed the Southern Manifesto, which called for resistance to the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. He also voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

I do have to disagree with one point. Sadly, I doubt most of the country would recognize who Robert Smalls is. (and yes, he very much deserves a ship named after him).

I am sadly certain, at this point, if you had a ship named the USS Smalls, 40% of the country would think Biggie, 40% would think The Sandlot, 15% would think it is a penis joke, and only 5% would know who it is really about.

Even if Trump did it,  the media won't report what Stennis' party affiliation was.
