BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Police in the northern Spanish city of Barcelona say a white van has jumped the sidewalk in the city's historic Las Ramblas district, injuring several people.

In a photograph shown by public broadcaster RTVE, three people were lying on the ground in the street Thursday afternoon and were apparently being helped by police and others.

A van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona's Ramblas tourist area.

Spanish police say several people have been injured in a "massive crash", while emergency services are urging people to stay away from the area around Plaça Catalunya.

Reports from the scene say people are taking cover in nearby shops and cafes.

Reuters news agency reports that emergency services have requested the closure of local metro and train stations.

El Pais newspaper said the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot after mowing down dozens of people.

Marc Esparcia, a 20-year-old student who lives in Barcelona, told the BBC: "There was a loud noise and everybody ran for cover. There were a lot people, lots of families [at the site], this is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona.

"I think several people were hit. It was horrible, there was panic. Terrible."

He said he was now taking cover inside a Starbucks coffee shop.

Details of this incident are still unclear, but vehicles have been used to ram into crowds in a series of militant attacks across Europe since July last year.

Reports of at least 2 dead now....

At least two people have reportedly been killed and several others have been injured after a van crashed on a pavement in a popular tourist area of Barcelona, authorities have said.

Holy Crap, I was just there six weeks ago.  Our hotel was right off of The Ramblas.   

It's a fantastic city, hate to see this happen there.

Spanish radio station Cadena Ser Radio and El Pais newspaper say 13 people have died and various newspapers say at least 20 have been wounded.

Catalan police have confirmed there is at least one dead and 32 injured, 10 seriously.

A few years ago or more I mentioned on one public talk forum that if guns were banned, terrorists would still get hold of them anyway.  And failing that they'd use knives, clubs, vehicles, explosives, etc.
I was,  of course, ridiculed by libs who thought there was no other way to kill people than with firearms.
