Personally, I've never been very impressed by the, "He's mentally" excuse.
It's fairly consistently trotted out as a defense for ISIS terrorists who go on rampages in Europe. The French authorities have already announced that the driver who rammed his car into a pizzeria killing a little girl is not a terrorist, but suffers from mental illness. It's unknown as of this moment if he's Muslim, but a number of past Muslim terrorists have had a history of mental illness.
But the media left is fairly selective in taking that into account.
For example, the unstable behavior of James Hodgkinson, the Bernie supporter who opened fire at a Republican charity practice game, was emphasized over his political views. That's also usually the way it is for Muslim terrorists. And some Black Lives Matter terrorists have benefited from the same privilege.
Meanwhile the attempts to blame Loughner's shooting of Congresswoman Giffords on conservatives, despite the lack of conservative politics (let alone allegiance to Sarah Palin) and abundance of evidence of mental illness, continues to this day.
And so here comes the information that Alex Fields, the driver in the Charlottesville killing, was mentally ill.
"The driver charged with killing a woman at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville was previously accused of beating his mother and threatening her with a knife, according to police records released Monday.
Samantha Bloom, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, repeatedly called police about her son, James Alex Fields Jr., in 2010 and 2011, telling officers he was on medication to control his temper, transcripts from 911 calls show.
In another incident in 2010, she said her son smacked her in the head and locked her in the bathroom after she told him to stop playing video games. There was no indication in the records that he was arrested."That's exactly the personality type you would expect to appear at one of these things.
"Fields also confided that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was younger and had been prescribed an anti-psychotic medication, according to the teacher, Derek Weimer.
Fields later enlisted in the Army and reported for basic training in 2015 but was released from active duty four months later because of what military described only as “a failure to meet training standards.”"Again, fairly typical.
It's unclear if Fields was currently on medication. But it really only matters as a litimus test. Does mental illness only serve to explain away the violence of leftists and their Islamist allies?
I tend to think that unstable people are naturally drawn to violent and extremist movements anyway. If you ran tests on the Antifa and Neo-Nazis at the clash, half of them probably have serious issues. Hitler and Stalin were not too tightly wound.
