EVERYONE knows deep down that physiognomy is baloney. Of course you can’t divine a person’s character from the way they look. Just because you resemble a lion doesn’t necessarily make you fierce, a high brow doesn’t denote intelligence, and there is no such thing as a criminal face.

Yet we cannot help judging by appearances – and the weird thing is that we often agree on these superficial judgements. This might suggest there is something in it, except that those character assessments usually turn out to be wrong. This is the puzzle at the heart of Alexander Todorov’s hugely entertaining Face Value.
