Teacup tornado’s inner twists and writhes seen for first time

When water does the twist, things get complicated. For the first time, researchers have measured exactly how water in a vortex twists and turns. This long-awaited observation could help us understand how storms form and let us make better models of the sun’s plasma.

Imagine the tiny tornado that forms in your tea as you stir it. Looking down on the swirling liquid in your teacup, the motion of the loop of at the top of your cup might seem simple, but there is more to it than meets the eye.
