Japan's Abe says he and Trump agree to take further action
« on: July 31, 2017, 01:44:39 pm »
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday he and President Donald Trump agreed to take further action against North Korea following its latest missile launch.

Abe told reporters after the call that Trump pledged to “take all necessary measures to protect” Japan and that Abe praised his commitment to do so.

He also called on China and Russia to do more to stop Pyongyang.

“We have made consistent efforts to resolve the North Korean problem in a peaceful manner, but North Korea has ignored that entirely and escalated the situation in a one-sided way,” Abe said, according to Bloomberg. “The international community, starting with China and Russia, must take this obvious fact seriously and increase pressure.”

Abe said Japan would pursue concrete steps to bolster defense system and capabilities under the firm solidarity with the U.S. and do utmost to protect the safety of the Japanese people.

The White House said in a statement after the phone call that the two leaders “agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and other countries near and far,” Reuters reported.

Two things Trump could/should do to get the attention of the Norks as well as the Chinese.

1) Joint press conference in Tokyo with Abe saying that the U.S. will back a plan to change portions of the Japanese Constitution that limits it's military to a home defense force.

2) Announce that we are going to work with their military on missile defense and ballistic missile technology for the purpose of Japan developing it's own nuclear arsenal to counter the egregious and blatant violations of sovereignty for not just Japan but the Philippines, Vietnam and other Island nations where China has overstepped it's bounds and the Norks can threaten with their ICBM's.

Do you think, especially these days, advanced ABM tech would remain with us?  We'd soon find ourselves undercutting our our deterrent force.

Depends on who we share it with and how advanced the ABM tech is.  We were willing to share it in Poland until Big Ears came in and pulled us out of the ABM agreement we'd made with Poland.

IMHO Japan is at the pointy end of the spear for the hostility of China, Russia and the Norks.

The need it badly.

China hits back at Trump criticism over North Korea

Ben Blanchard and Elias Glenn

BEIJING (Reuters) - China hit back on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted he was "very disappointed" in China following Pyongyang's latest missile test, saying the problem did not arise in China and that all sides need to work for a solution.

China has become increasingly frustrated with American and Japanese criticism that it should do more to rein in Pyongyang. China is North Korea's closest ally, but Beijing is angry with its continued nuclear and missile tests.

North Korea said on Saturday it had conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that proved its ability to strike the U.S. mainland, drawing a sharp warning from Trump and a rebuke from China.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke with Trump on Monday and agreed on the need for more action on North Korea just hours after the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations said Washington is "done talking about North Korea".

A White House statement after the phone call said the two leaders "agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and other countries near and far".

It said Trump "reaffirmed our ironclad commitment" to defend Japan and South Korea from any attack, "using the full range of United States capabilities".

Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday after the missile test that he was "very disappointed" in China and that Beijing profits from U.S. trade but had done "nothing" for the United States with regards to North Korea, something he would not allow to continue.

China's Foreign Ministry, in a statement sent to Reuters responding to Trump's tweets, said the North Korean nuclear issue did not arise because of China and that everyone needed to work together to seek a resolution.

"All parties should have a correct understanding of this," it said, adding the international community widely recognized China's efforts to seek a resolution.

The essence of Sino-U.S. trade is mutual benefit and win-win, with a vast amount of facts proving the healthy development of business and trade ties is good for both countries, the ministry added.

Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Qian Keming, weighed in too, telling a news conference there was no link between the North Korea issue and China-U.S. trade.

"We think the North Korea nuclear issue and China-US trade are issues that are in two completely different domains. They aren't related. They should not be discussed together," Qian said.

China, with which North Korea does the large majority of its trade, has repeatedly said it strictly follows U.N. resolutions on North Korea and has denounced unilateral U.S. sanctions as unhelpful.

China can complain all they want to...but they've been the puppet master behind North Korea since they committed their troops to the fight back in October of 1950.  They need to feel some pain from any sanctions or defensive measures our Asian allies take against the Norks.

Depends on who we share it with and how advanced the ABM tech is.

I just fear that this wouldn't get the secrecy it deserves.  And that woukd be devastating, taking out our huge nuclear deterrence.

I think we could trust the Japanese.  They truly have the most to lose on that side of the globe if any of the tech got out and into the wrong hands.

Unless and until Trump and the DoD bring back the 400 ship Navy and expand the ground forces to the point that we can backstop places like japan with our own forces from the land sea and air...the next logical step is to let them develop their own tech from the info we give them and let them improve on it the same way they've done with several of our aircraft.

Next best step would be to let the Israeli's share their battle proven ABM/AM tech with Japan and go from there.

I don't trust the US.

With a 400-ship Navy, we could perhaps even impose a blockade.

Yeah we still have those Libs who are more willing to help our adversaries than their own country and it's allies.

Trump has promised it...I hope he goes through with it.  If we don't and we fail to re-establish some freedom of movement in those areas that China now illegally claims as it's home waters...that whole area and our allies and interests in that region are in jeopardy.
