The Middle East can’t be fixed by American military solutions

The battle to oust the Islamic State from its last major stronghold in Iraq, the ancient city of Mosul, is finally won, but this is hardly the simple victory local parades and speechifying would suggest. After three years of ISIS occupation and months of fighting, Mosul’s thorough devastation is no less shocking for its predictability. Satellite imagery and photos on the ground show a city, which, even if it is successfully secured against re-occupation, is a long way from normalcy.
