Microsoft Paint to be killed off after 32 years

Microsoft’s next Windows 10 update, called the Autumn (or Fall in the US) Creators Update, will bring a variety of new features. But one long-standing stalwart of the Windows experience has been put on the chopping block: Microsoft Paint.

First released with the very first version of Windows 1.0 in 1985, Paint in its various guises would be one of the first graphics editors used by many and became a core part of Windows. Starting life as a 1-bit monochrome licensed version of ZSoft’s PC Paintbrush, it wasn’t until Windows 98 that Paint could save in JPEG.

Now Microsoft has announced that, alongside Outlook Express, Reader app and Reading list, Microsoft Paint has been signalled for death having been added to the “features that are removed or deprecated in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update” list.

I bet the successor program will not be as nearly easy to use and will be buggy as hell.......

I don't really understand the constant push to make Windows worse and worse.  Does anyone have an explanation?

They're trying to become Apple, so they emulate the worst of Apple, with none of the best of Apple.

That being said, in this day and age of Open Source, most built in programs are essentially unneeded (most but not all).

There are better programs available for any built in MS program like Notepad++ etc.

What makes you think there will 'be' a successor program.  Seems to me they would have said "we're replacing Paint with ___" if that was their intention.   There is no logical reason for them to be eliminating Paint as a free graphics feature.  But then.... logic hasn't played a part in their 'reasoning' for quite some years now (See: Windows 8 debacle).

Considering the vast number of free or very inexpensive programs out there that do more (even in the Window's app store), I'm surprised it lasted this long. Paint has been stuck in the 90s and doesn't really seem to meet the demands of current computer users.

On top of that, the top graphics programs costs have come down a lot. You can now get Photoshop and Lightroom for $10/month.

Isn't creator update supposed to include a new "Paint 3D"?

Well, the latest version of Paint is dumbed down from previous ones that were better, so it's no wonder it doesn't meet the demands.

FWIW my wife's computer updated to 1703 last week. The start menu shows Paint, but when I open it the ribbon has an icon that opens Paint 3D. I assume it's only the old Paint that will go away in the next update...

I will miss it.  It is a handy and easy to use program for simple jobs such as changing image size, cropping and such.   I use it all the time.

There are quite a few very sophisticated photo editing programs available to download for free.  My favorite is called photofiltre7.  It is free and does just about anything photoshop can do.

I still use some old version of Paint Shop Pro version 8 (it is paid for)... does what little I know to do with photos (crop, size, and occasionally put in text). The newer opensource GIMP program does more but I didn't like the interface.

IMHO, anyone who doesn't make a living via computer art work would be unwise to monthly rent a software program. 10 dollars a month is still 120 dollars a year, that is crazy.

GIMP has been around for years.  I'm still using the old 2.6 version though because I don't like the way the interface has been changed since then.

By taking something that was already apparently as bad as it could be, and finding a way to make it worse, the company is showing up the whole world.  ;')

Heh...

The real reason is, money.

It's not terribly intuitive, is it. Prefer using paint for most image stuff, it's fast and easy. Just use GIMP when I'm doing sprites, since I need transparent backgrounds for those.

GIMP's a full-fledged raster editor in a way that MS Paint is not.  I don't use GIMP that much any more for the simple reason that I moved on to mostly vector-based graphics and use CorelDRAW.

For resizing/cropping simple images, such as screenshots, Paint is useful, if for no other reason than that it loads much faster than GIMP, but for doing any sort of significant image editing I wouldn't use Paint.
