Causes of baldness, gray hair identified
Published Tuesday 9 May 2017
By Honor Whiteman

Researchers have pinpointed the mechanisms that promote gray hair and baldness.
A study of a rare genetic disease may have yielded a cure for hair graying and baldness, after researchers unintentionally discovered the mechanisms that give rise to the conditions.

Study co-author Dr. Lu Le, of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, and colleagues set out to investigate a disorder called neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic condition whereby tumors grow on nerves.

I am turning 53 this year and have exactly 1 grey hair on my head.
My beard is the exact opposite.  Does grey hair respond to gravity?

From an article linked on the same page:
Quote
... However, melanocyte stem cells in the hair follicle normally produce a new set of melanocytes at the start of the next hair growth cycle.

Once the new hair starts to grow, these melanocytes once again ensure that pigmentation is available. But when the melanocytes are damaged or absent, the hair that is produced lacks color and can look gray or white.  ...

When I saw my first gray hair in my 40s, I started dying it.   Unfortunately, my hair grows very fast.  Would have to dye my hair every 4 weeks at the most.   Complete dye job, not touch-up.   After 2 or 3 months, I decided I had better uses for my tIme and money.

I'm almost 65 now and my hair is almost completely grey.  And I'm proud of it.

They may have just become rich beyond their wildest dreams if they can turn this into a treatment for gray hair or baldness.

Wow. I pulled my first gray hair at 25. I figured it was a fluke.

Well, I earned the rest...
