The AFL's diversity manager says he is "deeply ashamed" and has apologised after being reported for punching an opponent in the head and knocking him unconscious during a suburban football match in Melbourne.

Ali Fahour was playing for West Preston-Lakeside in the Northern Football League on Saturday when he hit a Whittlesea player during a scuffle in the third quarter.

The incident was captured on video by a spectator.
