Senate GOP punts ObamaCare repeal past recess: report

Senate Republicans are delaying their effort to vote on legislation repealing ObamaCare until after the July 4 recess after a number of members said they opposed the current bill.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told members of the decision on Tuesday, according to CNN.

It appeared GOP leaders faced an almost certain defeat on a procedural vote for the measure that Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) earlier on Tuesday said was coming Wednesday.

Several GOP senators had said they would oppose their party on the vote, including Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine), Mike Lee (Utah) and Ron Johnson (Wis.).

I just saw that but it said that it was because there were 5 defectors... I guess McConnell wasn't talking about the bill with the Cruz amendment ... or who the heck knows.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will delay the vote on the Republican leadership's health care bill until after the July 4 recess.

McConnell told GOP senators that he wants to make changes to the bill, get a new Congressional Budget Office score and have a vote after the holiday, two sources told CNN.

McConnell said that President Donald Trump had invited all Republican senators to the White House on Tuesday afternoon.

We're going to continue discussion in our conference," McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill after his meeting with his caucus.

Good move.  They don't have the votes .... and maybe some more time to remember how to work with each other will help.

BTW ... the July 4th recess goes through Friday, July 7th.

GOP senator: Don't expect Trump to 'have your back' on healthcare vote

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is offering some frank advice for fellow Republican senators hoping to get help from the White House on repealing and replacing ObamaCare: Think again.
 
"Here's what I would tell any senator: If you're counting on the president to have your back, you need to watch it," Graham told reporters with a laugh on Monday evening.

"If you're looking for political cover from the White House, I'm not sure they're going to give it to you," he said. 

Graham's comments came after he was asked about Trump calling the House-passed legislation "mean" during a closed-door meeting with senators earlier this month.

The remarks appeared to catch lawmakers off guard, and marked a turn from when the president publicly praised the bill during a Rose Garden celebration last month.
