Stephen Hawking: Humans Should Ride a Beam of Light to Other Planets
By Tia Ghose, Senior Writer | June 20, 2017 04:02pm ET

Humanity should focus its efforts on exploring other worlds that we might inhabit, and to get there, Earthlings may need to ride on a beam of light, famed physicist Stephen Hawking says.

Hawking made his remarks today (June 20) at Starmus, an arts and science festival in Norway whose advisory board he sits on. In his speech, he reiterated his belief that humans need to explore space to avoid the dangers of our own finite world. And then he described how humans could one day travel on a beam of light, harnessing the power of Einstein's theory of relativity to reach mind-bogglingly distant planets. Only one small problem with that idea - human nature.

Who would YOU trust with a laser powerful enough to be capable of sending ships to the stars? I wouldn't even trust myself with it.
The universe doesn't hate you. Unless your name is Tsutomu Yamaguchi

Any ship large enough to carry humans that is capable of warp speed flown into a planet would be end of life for that planet I would think... If it is possible, that civilization won't be around long and will return the universe to a state without that capability pretty quickly... Or... They'd have to have a planetary shield that would be able to protect the planet from that sort of thing before it was a usable technology... Hmmm...

Yep!

I got into a discussion with a nice, but woefully naïve and ignorant lib who thought that the UN would be a perfect organization for controlling such potential weapons.

I would not. That kind of power would even corrupt him......

I was being silly. Besides, Scottie is no longer with us, he's with the stars.

I'll dream about catching a beam of light  to interstellar  travel.  That works for me.
