BEIJING — A city government says seven people were killed and 59 injured in an explosion at the front gate of a kindergarten in eastern China as relatives were picking up their children at the end of the school day on Thursday.

The Xuzhou city government in Jiangsu province said the blast at the Chuangxin Kindergarten in Fengxian, which struck at 4:50 p.m., was under investigation. It wasn't immediately clear whether the explosion was deliberately set or the result of an accident. Videos purportedly from the scene and posted on social media showed children and adults lying on the ground, some bleeding.

This is odd:

... It is the second tragedy to strike a Chinese kindergarten in recent weeks.

Last month 11 children died when a bus packed with kindergarten pupils burst into flames inside a tunnel in eastern Shandong province. It later emerged that the fire had been started deliberately by the driver, who also died.  ...

China is a big country, maps in the news report I saw showed Shanghai on the map, so maybe this is not terribly far from that city in the East. The West, in the province of Xianging is where they have some Islamic terror problems. So, I am not thinking it is that.

 Police have identified a suspect in an explosion at the front gate of a kindergarten in eastern China that killed eight and struck as relatives gathered to pick up their children at the end of the day, local authorities said Friday.

Police were investigating the explosion as a criminal act and said they had "targeted" a suspect, according to a statement issued by authorities in the city of Xuzhou and the official Xinhua News Agency. It was unclear if the suspect was apprehended and no potential motive was provided. A witness cited by state media said a gas cylinder at a roadside food stall had caused the blast.

Investigators say they found materials for making a homemade bomb at Xu's nearby residence. Emblazoned on its walls were the Chinese characters for death, disaster and other related dark themes.

Xu had left school because of a nervous system disorder, whose symptoms can include depression, anxiety, dizziness, vision problems and problems with basic bodily functions, the police said at a news conference in the city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu province.
