Plane lands safely in Sydney with hole in engine casing
WISN Milwaukee

A plane heading to Shanghai returned safely to Sydney after an in-flight problem left a gaping hole in an engine casing.

China Eastern Airlines said the crew on Flight 736 noticed damage to the air inlet on the left engine after takeoff Sunday evening and the captain decided to return.

The airline said on its Sina Weibo microblog that the plane landed safely and the airline was taking care of passengers’ needs. The Airbus A330 plane has two engines.

The wording on these is kinda scary.   The crew "observed" a problem.   Just seems like they considered going on with their flight.

They are lucky to be alive.  Could have easily cut into the wing (fuel).

@thackney
Aren't those engines supposed to have a collar in the engine which is supposed to retain fan blades that break and decide to depart the airplane.

I don't think that is a common feature.  I'm more familiar with areo-derivative turbines used on industrial applications.  That is an turbine engine designed first used on a jet, then modified to use as a driver for a compressor, generator, etc.  They did not have that type of "bullet-proof" collar either.

I've gone in a generator room where there was a ring of holes where each fan exited the building, all nearly at the same time.

It is not a common failure, but I still tend to catch myself and move outside that line if the engine is running.

Yeah, I try to avoid those seat rows. Minor chance of a blade being thrown, but it gives me irrational discomfort to sir there.
