No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

1910 (or 1909). Colonel Parker was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in Brevin Netherlands,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Tom_Parker

An interesting life to say the least, this is why he was called the Colonel.

Quote
In 1948, Parker received the rank of colonel in the Louisiana State Militia from Jimmie Davis, the governor of Louisiana and a former country singer, in return for work Parker did on Davis' election campaign.[12] The rank was honorary since Louisiana had no organized militia, but Parker used the title throughout his life, becoming known simply as "the Colonel" to many acquaintances.[12]

A lot on all of this for one thread. Books to read on Elvis, I've read a few. There are whole forums on Elvis as well.

Quote
1948, Born on this day, Richard McCarken, bass, Taste, (1970 UK No.18 album 'On The Boards').
Taste was Rory Gallagher's previous band to going solo.

Richard Hell of the Voidoids, more Punk rock.

It is Ariana Grande's birthday as well.

Amazing, 2 different shows.

Tribute shows are something, there is one for Connie Francis and that was combined with a Buddy Holly tribute show. Those kinds of shows are nice.

Croatians sing Johnny Cash and in my view, very well.

Books to read on Elvis, I've read a few.

The best of the lot: Peter Guralnick's two-volume biography, Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley and
Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley.

Guralnick has also written an excellent biography of Sam Phillips, Sam Phillips: The Man who Invented Rock 'n' Roll;
and, the best book yet on classic Southern soul, Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm and Blues and the Southern Dream
of Freedom
.

Just a few random songs from my playlist the past couple days:

Floyd Cramer, "On the Rebound"
Top-5 hit for Cramer, one of Nashville's most prolific pianists. This piece is an uncharacteristic rock and roll recording.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKwq6UW9bnU

Garth Brooks, "Make You Feel My Love"
This piece was written by Bob Dylan for his comeback album Time Out of Mind. It proved to be a hit for both Garth Brooks and Billy Joel. Joel's version stuck primarily to Dylan's stylings, while Brooks transformed into a more conventional ballad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FlSP0wsF5U

Sha Na Na, "Born to Hand Jive"
Finally, some music to get you dancing. This piece was originally composed for the Broadway musical Grease, with a much slower instrumentation typical of hand-jive music of the late 1950s. It's this souped-up version, recorded for the film (from which this clip is taken—side note: I know it's John Travolta and Robert Stigwood we're talking about here, but did they have to make it look exactly like Saturday Night Fever?), that is my personal favorite and adds a wild, zany atmosphere to the song.

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

Some is rich and some is poor
And that's the way the world is
But I don't believe in lyin' back
And sayin' how bad your luck is

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

So we came to jazz it up
We never loved a shovel
Break your back to earn your pay
An' don't forget to grovel

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

Imagine if all the boys in jail
Could get out now together
What do you think they'd want to say to us?
While we were bein' clever

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money

Of course, they weren't "The only band that matters" but that wasn't a bad sales pitch.

Well, I'd think they did show some leftwing Marxist types of sympathies (covered in the wiki bio).  Still, have quite a bit of music I enjoyed.

All music and members are welcome.  And thanks to all participants...

http://www.onthisday.com/music/birthdays.php

Some birthdays today,

Frank Mills, Music Box Dancer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6axPpprK-Y0

Born on this day, Bruce Johnson, vocals, guitar, The Beach Boys, (1966 UK & US No.1 single 'Good Vibrations', plus over 25 other UK Top 40 singles). He wrote the No.1 Barry Manilow hit 'I Write the Songs and also sang on the recordings for Elton John's 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' and several songs off Pink Floyd's album The Wall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRHKcyHm2so

Born on this day, American drummer Joey Covington, best known for his involvements with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Covington died in an automobile accident in Palm Springs, California, on June 4, 2013.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaHBMVtzfsU
One of my favorites by them.  People rave about the Hot Tuna records.

I'm not sure if that many other well-known names were born on this day.

... I think it was the 4th of July...'

For additional consideration; we seem to be heading towards that day.

Bruce Johnson per above, this is pretty good, I had little idea about this performer.

Wrote this, hey, some of us might not like it but it made millions.

Reading both sources, it looks like 2 members of Procol Harum were born today:

Quote
1943, Born on this day, Bobby Harrison, drums, Procol Harum, who had the 1967 UK No.1 & US No.5 single 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' and scored the hits 'Homburg', 'Conquistador'.

1945, Born on this day, David Knights, bassist, Procol Harum, 1967 UK No.1 & US No .5 single 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' and scored the hits 'Homburg', 'Conquistador'. He played on Procol Harum's first three albums.

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/born_today

AND:

Quote
1954, Born on this day, Steven J. Morse, guitarist, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple since 1994.

So someone from Dixie Dregs went on to play for Deep Purple. Amazing factoid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0ex6jdDB1w

Here was a 1969 hit in French but I can't help but think, it hugely takes from that main rift in White Shade of Pale.  Jane Birkin, the woman is British; famed for "Birkin bags", I believe a product of "Swinging London" or something like this.  Pamela Geller had a piece on this at her blog. Sometimes on the weekends especially, she delves into "popular culture".  (Those two got a bit excessive for me but this one is okay)

Again, everyone should just post their favorites because these details I think are just the tip of the iceberg but a conversational ice-breaker nonetheless.

1969, Henry Mancini started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Love Theme from Romeo And Juliet'. The film's love theme was used as the backing for "Our Tune" by DJ Simon Bates on his BBC Radio 1 show.

Good movie; we don't have many like that nowadays. One occasionally comes along.

I think she was married to John Barry for a brief stint.

Even if I won the lottery, I would not buy a Birkin bag. Paying over 10k for a handbag is silly.

Folks should read the article, I did not know the band Steam was basically a "fake" band (if that is what the article says, I don't want to misstate the situation); also, I thought maybe the chant was used at games before but apparently, the co-writers came up with it.

Stumbled on this facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GaryDecarloSteam

I read the wikipedia bio on Procol Haram, they said they often did "Baroque Rock", I"ve read about that before. It's a bit complex to explain but fascinating. Maybe even Spanky and Our Gang had some songs in that style as well.
