Fact Check: What's the Real Story on Seth Rich?

Online conspiracy theories hit the mainstream media last week and metastasized.

Ten months after his death, reports continue to circulate concerning the murder of Seth Rich, a 27-year-old data analyst for the Democratic National Committee. Seth Conrad Rich died hours after what police investigators (who are still working on the case) have long said was likely an attempted robbery. Online conspiracy theorists and cable news commentators, on the other hand, claim that Rich was a WikiLeaks informant and insinuate that he was killed for political reasons.

These theories began with insinuations from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who offered a $20,000 reward for information about Rich's murder last August and suggested that Rich may have been a martyr to WikiLeaks' mission and the source of leaked DNC emails. But the theories were fueled by other parties, too. Republican lobbyist Jack Burkman—who's worked with the Rich family, canvassing their Northwest D.C. neighborhood for leads, and is offering a $105,000 reward—has said that he believes the Russian government may be to blame.

I thought the article you linked was a good one. It is the first that I have read that attempts to deconstruct how this conspiracy theory got started.

Do we even have Seth's autopsy, we basically lack info on this case so Weekly Standard ride out on their high horse and point out Rod Wheeler's supposed errors and they may well be errors because it seems this case is so hushed up.

It reminds me of what I saw on the TBR Twitter timeline the day we were down.  Some nut posted a fake photo of Ariana Grande, and when she was advised of that fact, screeched, "Why are you defending Ariana Grande?"

Sounds to me like this is largely based on what this Rod Wheeler said at one point but has since retracted. Wheeler was hired by an outsider with an axe of his own to grind.

Yeah, he should be, and people like Hannity and Palin agreed until he said something bad about Hillary Clinton.  That's all it took to make them undergo complete 180s.

Gorbachev was a lot "nicer" than Putin but Reagan had zero qualms about being tough with him and merciless with the ideology that drove him.

I have a Russian friend who says that Reagan destroyed the Soviet Union with one act. Where Soviet leaders looked over the heads of crowds in red square and told them what government would do, Reagan looked them in the eye and told them that God had set a destiny for mankind to be free to determine our own path. Reagan put himself out there as one of them rather than above them and it broke the government hold.
