I have eaten canned food that had been stored in controlled and ideal conditions for five years past the date on the can. No ill effects and the food (canned tuna) was fine.

The cans had no dents or bulges and had been stored at about 60 degrees and at low humidity.

Dessert tonight was canned pears, courtesy of the MOD. Expiration date on the can is Sept 1989.

They were fine.
