Army Concerned Over Ban on Cluster Munitions, Land Mines

Military.com | 2 May 2017 | by Matthew Cox

U.S. Army ammunition specialists are scrambling to develop quick-fix solutions to a fast-approaching Pentagon deadline that will end the use of cluster munitions and anti-personnel mines.

Defense Department policy mandates that the U.S. military stop using cluster munitions such as the 155mm Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition as well as anti-personnel mines often used to deny enemy forces access and freedom of movement on the battlefield by January 2019, Jim Shields, head of Program Executive Office Ammunition, told an audience Tuesday at the National Defense Industrial Association's 2017 Armaments Systems Forum.

Just go for anti-vehicle mines for very light vehicles. 150 lbs or so...

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

It's a scramble, but it's a worthwhile scramble for once.

Cluster munitions are one thing, but land mines are straight from the mind of Satan. Hate the sodding things.

I have a tendency to be an unannounced smartass, its' congenital and I am resigned to it. In reality, I'd prefer the cluster bomblet munitions stay in the arsenal. Use it and done, except for duds. Landmines, not so much. Too much 'legacy' damage done by those over the long haul.

Land mines would be fine if armies would learn to pick up their toys at the end of play time. They don't.

Far as I'm concerned, a country using landmines should gain the same level of response as for using CW.
