Trump and Putin Agree to Seek Syria Cease-Fire

By PETER BAKER and NEIL MacFARQUHARMAY 2, 2017

WASHINGTON — President Trump reopened direct communications with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on Tuesday and sought to reignite what he hoped would be a special relationship by agreeing to work together to broker a cease-fire in war-torn Syria.

In their first telephone conversation since the United States launched a cruise missile strike on Syria’s Moscow-backed military to retaliate for a chemical weapons attack on civilians, Mr. Trump agreed to send a representative to Russian-brokered cease-fire talks that start on Wednesday in Astana, Kazakhstan. He and Mr. Putin also discussed meeting each other in Germany in July.

Readout of President Donald J. Trump’s Call with President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation
White House, Office of the Press Secretary, May 2, 2017

President Donald J. Trump of the United States and President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation spoke today regarding Syria.  President Trump and President Putin agreed that the suffering in Syria has gone on for far too long and that all parties must do all they can to end the violence.  The conversation was a very good one, and included the discussion of safe, or de-escalation, zones to achieve lasting peace for humanitarian and many other reasons.  The United States will be sending a representative to the cease-fire talks in Astana, Kazakhstan on May 3-4.  They also discussed at length working together to eradicate terrorism throughout the Middle East.  Finally, they spoke about how best to resolve the very dangerous situation in North Korea.

Trump, Putin talk Syria in phone call
The Hill, May 2, 2017, Jordan Fabian

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to speed up diplomatic efforts designed to end the bloody civil war in Syria, the White House said Tuesday.

The White House described the Tuesday phone call between the two leaders as a “very good one” and said they discussed the possibility of forming safe zones to shelter civilians fleeing the conflict. The U.S. also agreed to send representatives to cease-fire talks next month.

Trump and Putin “agreed that the suffering in Syria has gone on for far too long and that all parties must do all they can to end the violence,” the White House said.

Trump is hoping that Putin will apply pressure on North Korea to cease its nuclear weapons activity, a topic they spoke about during their conversation, according to the White House and the Kremlin.

Putin reportedly offered an olive branch to Trump: Both men spoke about arranging a meeting tied to a Group of 20 summit meeting in Germany this summer, the Kremlin said, according to the Russia-based Interfax news agency.

So how do we get the Syrian Rebels (aka ISIS) to agree to said cease-fire?
Putin's on the side of Assad.
Our side seems to jump back and forth daily.
But ISIS isn't party to the cease fire talk per this (not that they would be).
