Oxford University apologizes after eye contact racism claim irks autism community

By Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Friday, April 28, 2017

Oxford University has apologized for a newsletter that suggested avoiding eye contact was an example of casual racism after receiving backlash from the autism community.

The university’s equality and diversity newsletter had included a list of “microaggressions” that said not making eye contact or speaking directly to people could be an example of “subtle, everyday racism,” BBC News reported.

Social media users accused the university of being insensitive to people with autism, who can sometimes experience difficulty making eye contact with others.
