U.S. Test Fires Boeing's $40M Missile in Message to North Korea

The U.S. test fired the Boeing (BA)-made Minuteman III missile amid growing tensions with North Korea over the Kim regime’s nuclear program.

The Minuteman III is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of carrying nuclear warheads. When it was built in the 1970s, each missile had a price tag of $7 million, or more than $40 million in current dollars. Since the initial production run, the Air Force has made upgrades to the Minuteman III including modern targeting systems.

So, did the missile cost 7 million? Or did it cost 40 million?

If we paid 7 million for it, that was the cost.  The replacement would cost more, if it will be replaced.

It cost 7 million at the time.  Adjusted dollars is 40m.

Okay. It's a 7 million dollar missile. We didn't pay 40 million for it, our money is now worth 17.5% of what it was worth then.

Meh.  They've been regularly doing test firings of these missiles since they were first fielded.  Happens every year or two or three.

It's a convenient to portray it as a "message," I suppose -- but they were gonna do it anyway.
